    Descriptions of positions for Summer Camp

    Cabin Counselors

    REQUIREMENTS:
    - Minimum age of 18.
    - Previous camp experience or similar experience .
    - Understands needs, abilities and interests of children and adults who are mentally handicapped.
    -Works with others in mature and professional manner.
    - Red Cross Basic First Aid, CPR desirable but not required
    - Knowledge of sign language helpful but not required
    - File application, 3 references and current health form prior to camp opening.
    - The ability to respond to critical incidents.
    - Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques taught in orientation.
    - Physical ability to assist campers to exit cabins in emergencies.
    - Ability to plan activities that help all campers in the cabin group to experience success.
    - Ability to understand and follow all Camp policies and procedures.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    - Live in a cabin with assigned group of 5 or 6 campers assisting them with their
    daily routine and ADL's (activities of daily living: showering, dressing, toileting, eating, etc.).
    - Accompany campers to scheduled programs and give needed assistance
    - Plan and initiate own activities and events during free periods.
    - Work with Unit Leader to develop cabin skills programs, free time activities and camper hobbies.
    - Work cooperatively with other cabin staff to support campers.
    - Facilitate building camper self esteem through Positive Programming: Campers experience success, they have choices, they engage in a variety of activities, they have opportunities to be independent and there is a natural flow of meaningful activities.
    - Understand and follow the Policies and Procedures of Camp Horizons
    - Attend and participate in orientation and all staff meetings.

    Program Instructors

    REQUIREMENTS:
    · Minimum age of 19.
    · Previous camp experience or similar experience .
    · Understands needs, abilities and interests of campers with special needs.
    · Works with others in mature and professional manner.
    · Knowledgeable in one of the specialist areas and have had previous experience teaching.
    · Red Cross Lifesaving and/or Basic First Aid desirable.
    · Knowledge of sign language helpful.
    · File application for, 3 references and current health form prior to camp opening.
    · The ability to respond to critical incidents
    · Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce emergency
    procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
    · Physical ability to assist campers to exit cabins in emergencies
    · Ability to plan activities that help all campers in the cabin group to experience success

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    · Plan, teach and supervise assigned groups in program area.
    · Inventory necessary materials and make orders available to Program Coordinator.
    · Keep program area clean, neat and orderly.
    · Develop appropriate (age, ability, focus) activities for campers, that involve games
    activities and movement.
    · Assist in planning and leading evening activities
    · Live in a cabin with assigned group and assist in Cabin Life: (i.e. showering campers,
    assisting with morning and bedtime routines).
    · Eat meals and attend evening activities with assigned group.
    · Cover the group 4 nights per week.
    · Facilitate building camper self esteem through positive programming: Campers experience
    success, they have choices, they engage in a variety of activities they have opportunities
    to be independent and there is a natural flow of meaningful activities.
    · Participate in pre-camp orientation.
    · Participate in all staff and program instructor meetings.

    Junior Counselors

    REQUIREMENTS:

    - Minimum age of 15
    - Previous camp experience or similar experience in child-oriented program desirable.
    - A desire to understand needs, abilities and interests of children and young adults who are mentally handicapped.
    - Works with other staff in mature and responsible manner.
    - Red Cross Lifesaving and/or Basic First Aid desirable.
    - Knowledge of sign language helpful.
    - Must file application form, 3 references and current health form prior to camp opening.
    - The ability to respond to critical incidents
    - Ability to assist in observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate behavior management techniques
    - Physical ability to assist campers to exit cabins in emergencies
    - Ability to assist in planning activities that help all campers in the cabin group to experience success


    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    - Live in assigned cabin with assigned group of 5 or 6 campers.
    - Accompany campers to programs and assist where needed.

    Horseback Riding Assistants

    RESPONSIBILITIES
    -Assist with instructing five classes per day to five or six campers, Monday through Friday.
    -Maintain a healthy, safe environment in the program area. Assisting in caring for the horses and their surroundings.
    -Follow Camp Organizational and Program procedures.
    -Assist in maintaining appropriate camper records and evaluating camper progress.
    -Assist in developing and maintaining necessary program materials, displays and equipment.
    -Attend all Program Instructor and staff meetings.
    -Participate in pre-camp orientation.
    -Assume cabin responsibilities, to include: living with a group, assisting at mealtimes, evening activities, shower times and bed time routines. Covering a group four nights and one day per week
    -The ability to respond to critical incidents
    -Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety
    regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management
    techniques
    -Physical ability to assist campers to exit cabins in emergencies

    REQUIREMENTS
    -Minimum age 18.

    -Understand needs, abilities, and interests of campers that are mentally handicapped. -Work with other staff in a mature, professional manner.
    -Have working knowledge of horses and outdoor skills.
    -Previous experience teaching.
    -Red Cross Standard First Aid and CPR desirable.
    -Knowledge of sign language helpful.

    Camp Nurse

    POSITION: The Camp Nurses are responsible for monitoring the general health care, dispensing medications, working with the on-call physician, setting-up and running the the health of staff & campers, administering medications, keeping all health records and running the camp infirmary.

    ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: Nurses are responsible to the Director of Operations and Assistant Directors

    QUALIFICATIONS: Over 21 years of age. Have experience as a professional in the medical field. Holds a Connecticut Registered Nurse License. Experience with people who are mentally handicapped is desirable. Possess excellent communication skills. The ability to respond in critical incidents.

    RESPONSIBILITIES: The Camp Nurse is responsible for:

    · Securing vital medical information from parents, providers or guardians on opening day, and verifying medical form information.

    · Body checks on campers within 24hrs. of their arrival, and departure from camp.

    · Dispensing and recording medications. Medications are to be recorded in the Log
    Book and on camper cardexes after they are given.

    · Monitoring general health care for campers and staff, including conducting and recording routine health checks on kitchen staff.

    · Inventory of medical supplies to be submitted with proposed order as needed. Meet regularly with counselors and Unit Leaders to monitor cabin life health

    · Maintain regular contact with camp physician, nurse, and pharmacy, as needed. Organize and complete follow ups on visits to the doctor or Walk-in clinic as needed for campers and staff.

    · Maintain daily contact with the Director of Operations/Assistant Directors, which may include a member of the Medical Team attending the morning Administrative meetings and act as member of the Summer Administrative Team in emergency and medical procedures.
